The Argentine ambassador to the United States and sherpa before the G-20, Jorge Argüello, received on Monday the two G-20 sherpas from Indonesia, Dian Triansyah Djani and Edi Prio Pambudi, an occasion in which he confirmed the attendance of President Alberto Fernández to the Summit of Heads of State and Government of that group in Bali, in that Southeast Asian country, on November 15 and 16 and highlighted the “fundamental role” of that alliance in the current world scenario.

At the meeting, which was held at the Argentine embassy in Washington, Argüello highlighted the “fundamental role” of the G-20, especially with the war in Ukraine as a background, “understood as a global space for cooperation, Argentina’s position maintains that the forum must be preserved and the channels of dialogue maintained”he emphasized.

“It is this path that will allow us to identify the parameters of an understanding that will allow us to overcome the conflict. President Alberto Fernández will participate in the November summit and will try to promote a common position with the member countries of the forum, Mexico and Brazil, and with the emerging countries that are members of the group”expanded the ambassador, reported sources from the Argentine embassy.

The invitation to Fernández for that summit had been transmitted in Buenos Aires to Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero by the Indonesian ambassador to Argentina, Niniek Kun Naryatie.

Besides, Argüello confirmed the presence of Economy Minister Martín Guzmán at the G-20 Finance Ministers’ Meeting to be held in Washington on April 20; that of Foreign Minister Cafiero at the group’s Meeting of Foreign Ministers in Bali on July 7 and his own participation on July 10, in Indonesia, of the twenty Sherpas (high-level government representatives, negotiators or advisers).

Argüello emphasized the importance of the multilateral space in recent major international political and economic conflicts. In this regard, he argued thatin 2008 the G-20 made an important contribution to avoiding the effects of the financial crisis. In 2020 it was able to coordinate actions to deal with the pandemic. In 2021, he emphasized the climate crisis and raised it to the top of the international agenda. Today we have a new challenge of important humanitarian dimensions, and The G-20 must urgently identify what its contribution will be to overcoming this conflict”described.

The ambassador clarified that “The situation in Ukraine presents a new challenge and cannot be ignored, despite the fact that the G-20 is in principle an economic forum and not an international security one. Issues that are on the G-20 agenda such as food and energy security now, as a consequence of the war in Ukraine, will have to be approached from a new perspective.”

And he also warned that “the situation in Ukraine and Russia’s action have had an impact on all multilateral economic and trade forums, such as the WTO (World Trade Organization)”.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Sherpas also held a meeting in Washington with Daleep Singh, the Sherpa of US President Joe Biden.

This year the presidency of the G-20 is the responsibility of Indonesiaafter Italy hosted the body’s meetings in 2021.
