Argimón acknowledged that the Penadés case had repercussions on the National Party and Parliament

“You know that episodes like these, so strong, have repercussions on society itself, on the (National) Party and in general in parliamentary life“Argimón said at a press conference recorded by Telemundo.

The pro-government senator sent a public letter to Argimón this week in her role as president of the Senate. In this letter Penadés asked that, if necessary, the parliamentary privileges be withdrawn immediately so that the investigation can advance.

“It is an issue that is in court and we hope that it has the corresponding path and that it has been marked. In this sense we are calm“said the vice president.

Other reactions of the ruling party

Argimon added that “A few days ago” he had contact with Penadés, but avoided explicitly endorsing the senator. The president of the Republic Luis Lacalle Pou, meanwhile, was more emphatic on the matter and replied “I believe him”in relation to Gustavo Penadés.

The Minister of the Interior and senator incumbent on the bench that Penadés occupies, Luis Alberto Heber, also supported his co-religionist and it earned him criticism from the opposition that the Ministry of the Interior must act independently

Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Presidency Álvaro Delgado said that “it was logical” that the senator was not going to rely on his parliamentary privileges.

But Laura Raffothe possible pre-candidate for president for Herrerismo -a sector to which Penadés belongs- preferred to be more cautious in her statements. “I trust justice,” said the former candidate for mayor of Montevideo.
