The Argentine Minister of Security, Aníbal Fernández, confirmed that he will put the leader of the Mapuche Ancestral Resistance (RAM) group, Facundo Jones Huala, on extradition trial.
Fernández stated in conversation with radius 10 that “Chile appears before the government and will begin a process in accordance with Law 24,767, which clearly states that (the detainee) will have due process and will have a first instance and eventually the Supreme Court.”

“(Huala) is sentenced in Chile and is under house arrest, fired his lawyers and fled. We had the responsibility that this did not happen without any consequences. The people of Río Negro knew what our mission was. In this case (the arrest) was made by the Río Negro Police, who worked very well with us,” he added.
The case
The Chilean justice sentenced the RAM leader to 9 years in prison for an arson attack on the Pisu Pisué farm in Río Bueno, Los Ríos region, which occurred in 2013 and which would have his participation. Added to this is the illegal carrying of weapons.
In January 2022, the Valdivia Court of Appeals determined his conditional release, which was revoked by the Supreme Court, but Huala’s whereabouts were no longer known.
In this regard, Fernández stated that “we knew that he was going to be in Argentina at some point, we were very clear that we were going to stop him here.”
On January 30, the Río Bueno Prosecutor’s Office requested the extradition of Facundo Jones Huala. For this, the Rio Bueno Guarantee Court must set a hearing to review the detainee’s background and, if they are accepted, it will go to the Valdivia Court of Appeals.
