Argentine lawyer detained in Venezuela denounces in video that he fears for his life

Germán Darío Giuliani

He was arrested in May of last year in Caracas. He is accused by the Venezuelan authorities of crimes such as “terrorism, drug trafficking and mercenarism” and, as far as is known, remains housed in the Yare II Penitentiary Center.

Giuliani appears in the images with a desperate message. “I am not a terrorist nor do I talk about political issues or anything similar. I make this video because I fear for my life, I fear that I will not get out of this… No citizen of the world deserves to have what is happening to me happen to them,” says the lawyer.

He was arrested in May of last year in Caracas. He is accused by the Venezuelan authorities of crimes such as “terrorism, drug trafficking and mercenarism” and, as far as is known, remains housed in the Yare II Penitentiary Center.

In the other part of the video, broadcast by the channel TNGiuliani added that “no citizen of the world deserves to have what is happening to me happen to him,” he stressed that he is a lawyer and that he knows his rights but that “here I feel that I have no rights and that they are doing what they want or whatever they want with me.”

He also asked for help from “Argentine diplomacy” and stressed that he needed “international organizations, I appeal for this to be known, not only for me but so that it does not happen to other people.”

The lawyer’s wife, Virginia Rivero, also confirmed in TN that the images were recorded a week after her husband’s arrest.

“Germán’s sisters created a page on Instagram called Justice for Giuliani. At this moment when the people of Venezuela began to dare to report, they are realizing that this is the way, the pressure, the complaint. They shared this video of Germán on that Instagram, which is very close to the date of his arrest. I think it is a week old, it was a week later,” he said.

Days ago, from the Apostolic Nunciature located in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Recoleta, Rivero had demanded the release along with relatives of the other Argentines, among whom was María Alexandra Gómez, Gallo’s partner.

“The claim remains intact,” said Rivero, who highlighted the reception by the Nunciature and explained that “the specific request is that the Vatican or the necessary authorities can intercede, because this moment is a moment that must be pressured and that they must listen to us.”

“We want liberation and we need to open possibilities for the release of all political prisoners,” she said and stressed that her husband is “innocent,” despite the fact that one of the regime’s leaders, Diosdado Cabello, mentioned that Giuliani had been detained on the high seas “because he was going to pick up a Serb.”

Giuliani arrived in Venezuela on April 5, 2025 for work and business reasons, according to his family, who repeat that he was detained simply for speaking with an Argentine accent.
