The Periodistas Argentinas (PA) collective paid tribute to fifteen leading women and media workers who inspired and paved the way for new generations, within the framework of International Women’s Day.
During the act that took place in the Manzana de las Luces (Perú 294) in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Monserrat, Magdalena Ruiz Guiñazú and Mónica Cahen D’Anvers were recognized for their career and thanked the distinction through a video.
Nora Lafón, María Seoane, Fanny Mandelbaum, Clara Mariño, Annamaría Muchnik, Gloria Guerrero and Blanca Rébori were also awarded.
Other prominent journalists who were honored were Luisa Valmaggia, Nora Bär, and Stella Calloni.
In addition, they were honored Diana Zurco, who works on Public TV and is the first trans presenter to work on a central news program in Argentina, Mónica Gutiérrez and Liliana López Foresi.
Seoane emphasized that “we need to return to journalism urgently, imperatively, that finds us in the place of freedom. I would like us to be free, to be able to tell what the story reflects, when we cannot do it, we are not free.”
Nora Lafón maintained that “she feels very honored” and stressed that “there have been many years of struggle: journalism cannot be done without passion, this is the most important thing; everything else does not exist.”
For her part, Valmaggia affirmed after being honored: “It has always been said that women are very competitive and this is a demonstration that we weave networks, it is a very plural recognition”.
“Many of us work without realizing that we have a gender perspective, many times intuitively, but the truth is that we have been learning along this path and in this society,” she said, underlining the commitment to “give the baton to those who come They have a lot of power.”
Regarding the war in Europe, he hoped that “the conflict between Russia, Ukraine and NATO can be resolved at a negotiating table” and also asked for the freedom of Milagro Sala.
Blanca Rébori recalled that “I had to show that I could do my job, that I could carry out an interview” and pointed out that in the profession “we need to go in depth, renew ourselves, what we Argentines produce.”
He dedicated the recognition to his partner “of life for more than 35 years and that the Covid has just taken him very recently: I dedicate it to Fernando Ferreira”, a journalist with a long career who passed through the newsroom of Télam between 2011 and 2016 .
For her part, Diana Zurco stressed that “the historical figures” present at the event “marked the way” and “being among them is an honor for me” because “we represent a collective construction of our role as communicators in an era in which we still account needs to be taken of gender perspectives”.
“Speaking from our own voices in the case of trans women who begin to occupy communication roles, previously unthinkable, we have that commitment and that flag is twinned with feminism,” she said.
During the act, Diana maintained that “women always cost her, you can’t imagine trans women”, she thanked feminism that “embraced her” and called on the private media to comply with the trans work quota.
Meanwhile, science journalist Nora Bär stressed that “we fight against the resistance of the media that do not open many places for specialists; all media should have journalists specialized in science, technology and health because they are news that require a special type of treatment. “.
The event was led by Nancy Pazos, Eugenia Morea and Silvia Martínez Cassina, who said goodbye to Channel 13 after 30 years and was applauded for her commitment and conduct “until the last minute.”
Also participating were the president of the national news agency Télam, Bernarda Llorente; the Legal and Technical Secretary of the Nation, Vilma Ibarra, and the journalists Lorena Maciel and María O`Donnell who received the medal on behalf of Magdalena Ruiz Guiñazú
Also present were the Public Defender, Miriam Lewin; the national deputy for the province of Buenos Aires, Daniel Arroyo; and the head of the White Helmets organization, Sabina Frederic, among other personalities.
Argentine Journalists is a space for exchange and collaboration created in June 2018 and made up of more than 200 professionals from graphic and digital media, television, radio and various institutions.
The group held the meeting after it acquired great importance at the end of last December due to the preparation of the “America Report”, a compendium of complaints of cases of violence against workers of that television channel.
The series of stories, linked to the accusations made against the driver Antonio Laje for mistreatment and gender violence, were submitted to five State agencies for evaluation.
