Argentine Foreign Minister repudiates Macrismo's attack against Celac

The Argentine Minister of Foreign Affairs, Santiago Cafiero, assured today that the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) is a sovereign and broad forum, when questioning statements by former President Mauricio Macri.

Through his profile on the social network Twitter, the foreign minister rejected a publication by the former head of state in which he attacked the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and the president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, invited to the VII Summit of Heads of State and of government of that body

The arrival of the leaders begins

The VII Summit of Heads of State of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) begins on Monday, which will take place in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The plenary meeting will be on Tuesday at the Sheraton hotel, which will be attended by fourteen other presidents, including Gustavo Petro, from Colombia; Nicolás Maduro, who has not yet confirmed; Gabriel Boric, from Chile and Díaz-Canel, from Cuba; and Xiomara Castro, from Honduras, who already arrived in the city this Sunday afternoon.

Upon his arrival in Buenos Aires, Díaz Canel described Celac as indispensable, “an integration mechanism that we have the duty and the opportunity to revitalize,” he said.

“We aspire that unity in diversity, a key principle that we share, allows us to act as a solid regional family to promote and project the discussion of a global agenda to Latin America and the Caribbean,” said the president.

The Brazilian president will arrive in Argentina this Sunday night to make his first official visit and on Monday to sign a strategic agreement with Fernández that, according to Casa Rosada’s evaluation, will be the cornerstone of the new relationship between both countries.

There will be very ambitious long-term projects, such as generating a common currency for trade between the two countries without having to use the dollar.

On Wednesday, after the CELAC meeting, the President of Argentina, Alebrto Fernández, will have different bilateral meetings with some of his peers, such as the Prime Minister of Barbados; Mia Mottley; that of Haiti, Ariel Henry; the President of the European Council, Charles Mitchel; Christopher Dodd, former senator and adviser for the Americas to US President Joe Biden, and FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu.

According to Página 12, the presidents of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega and Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, will not attend either, the foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard, will come in his place.

Finally, on Saturday, the international week will end with the arrival in Argentina of the German Prime Minister, Olaf Scholz, who will visit the country for two days with an important delegation of officials and businessmen.
