The Argentine Football Association (AFA) suspended this Thursday the local tournament matches arranged for this Friday, as a result of the attempted attack with a firearm against the Argentine vice president, Cristina Fernándezaccording to official sources.
“The Argentine Football Association expresses its strongest rejection of what happened with the Vice President of the Nation, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner,” the AFA reported in a brief statement on Twitter.
During the night of this Thursday a man was arrested in Buenos Aires after trying to shoot Fernández, in the surroundings of his home, when a vigil was held in his support.
“All the matches scheduled for today (September 2) are suspended,” added the entity that brings together all the soccer teams in the South American country.
According to police sources, the detainee would be a person of Brazilian nationality who wielded a Bersa 32-caliber automatic weapon, which, at its base, has a partial numbering of 250, suitable for firing.
Images taken by the local press recorded the moment in which the suspect pulls out the gun in front of the former president’s face (2007-2015) and tries to shoot twice before being detained by Fernández’s custody.
“We make an appeal to society as a whole warning that violence of any order is never the way,” closed the official statement from the AFA.
