On Wednesday, July 13, the President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, announced that the government had reached a “beneficial” feasibility agreement with China, initiated in September 2021, to work on a Free Trade Agreement.

Lacalle Pou said that the agreements represent “prosperity, opportunities and work”, and that since the beginning of the government “the focus has been on trying to sell raw materials, national industrial and technological products”.

Following the announcements made by the Uruguayan president, the Secretariat for International Economic Relations issued a statement claiming the historical construction of MERCOSUR, which is the Treaty of Asunción (by which the bloc was created in 1991), and “a brand that has to have the participation and consensus of all parties”, reported the EFE agency.

The Argentine Secretary of State said that what Uruguay has done is “advance a preliminary feasibility study, which must then be dealt with and internalized within MERCOSUR and must be analyzed by all member countries.”

“Every time the bloc has been able to achieve extra-MERCOSUR agreements with other countries or other regions, what has always been done are studies where there must be a consensus of all parties,” the Argentine government statement highlights.

On July 21, the biannual MERCOSUR summit will be held in Asunción, in which Paraguay will hand over the pro tempore presidency to Uruguay.
