Argentina will become the next destination with which Dominican Republic will sign a agreement of open skiesa treaty that would facilitate the entry and exit of airlines in both countries, generating greater competitiveness and reducing airfares.

This was confirmed by the Minister of Tourism, David Colladowhen speaking to the press within the framework of the first Summit from UN Tourism for Africa and the Americas, held in Punta Cana.

Argentina has a growth this year by 150% (in tourist arrivals). It’s a market extremely strong and interesting for our country, and is within our strategy to strengthen our relationships with what is called Southern Cone“, he stated.

Improve the prices and encourage competitiveness

Within the framework of the summit, the secretary of TourismEnvironment and Sports ArgentinaDavid Scioli, congratulated the Dominican Republic for having recently closed the open skies agreement with the United States.

“Competition improves prices and tourist packages,” he acknowledged, anticipating his country’s interest in finalizing a open skies agreement with the Dominican Republicwhich, if achieved, would become the eighth that Argentina signs with other countries to facilitate access for foreign commercial airlines to its open space.

“We see that many Argentines are visiting the Dominican Republicbut we hope that more dominicans visit us too,” said the official, recognizing the dynamism that this country has presented in recent years.

During 2023, the country received around 16,693 Argentine passengers by air, which added up to a total of 199,668 tourists from the South American country, according to data from the Central Bank.

“The signature of open skies would reinforce the ties of friendship between both countries,” Collado assured his Argentine counterpart at the time of receiving the news, making the Dominican Civil Aviation Board (JAC) available as the main authority to finalize the treaty.

The Secretary General of the United Nations Organization for Tourism (UN Tourism), Zurab Pololikashvili, welcomed the approach and expressed that it would be very positive if in the future direct flights were established between Buenos Aires and Punta Cana, or Buenos Aires and Santo Domingo, for the air connectivity.
