The Argentine Foreign Ministry issued a second statement on the night of this Friday, December 13, to condemn another “arbitrary and unjustified” detention, this time of a local employee of the Argentine diplomatic representation in Venezuela. With this, two officials of that government would be detained in the country and reported in less than three hours.
“This action constitutes a flagrant and unacceptable violation of international standards that guarantee the inviolability of diplomatic headquarters and the protection of their personnel, including those who perform essential functions,” reads part of the statement.
The institution pointed out that it was not an isolated event, but part of a sustained campaign of harassment, intimidation and psychological violence against opposition asylum seekers and employees of the Argentine mission. A situation that worsened in recent weeks with water and electricity outages.
Added to the aforementioned is the presence of snipers stationed in front of the headquarters and the illegal occupation of neighboring homes. The Argentine Government said that this constitutes “a de facto siege” with the clear objective of exerting pressure and generating a climate of terror for those inside the diplomatic representation.

The Argentine Government categorically demanded the immediate release of the local employee and the delivery of safe conduct for people asylum in the diplomatic headquarters.
“We appeal to the Secretary General of the United Nations to act with the urgency and determination that this situation demands. It is necessary to guarantee the release of the local employee, the delivery of safe conduct and the end of the harassment and psychological terror exercised by the Nicolás Maduro regime against the Argentine diplomatic mission and the people under its protection. Passivity or delay in action will only contribute to aggravating the situation,” the Foreign Ministry warned.

The other official detained in Venezuela is the non-commissioned officer of the Argentine National Gendarmerie, First Corporal Nahuel Agustín Gallo, by the Venezuelan authorities since December 8.
The Foreign Ministry of that country made an urgent call to the international community to join this demand as firmly as possible. «The immediate release of the local employee and the delivery of safe conduct for asylum seekers cannot wait any longer. The consequences of inaction could be irreparable.
