Argentina asks the ICC for arrest warrants against those responsible for crimes in Venezuela

Argentina CPI

The representative of Argentina assured that the Venezuelan situation has worsened “even more” after the “fraudulent elections of July 2024”, which is why he considers “immediate attention” necessary.

Argentina asked the International Criminal Court this Monday to issue arrest warrants and demanded “immediate attention” from the International Criminal Court (ICC) this Monday given the “deterioration” of the situation in Venezuela

“The arbitrary detentions, inhuman treatment and other crimes against humanity perpetrated by the Venezuelan regime require rigorous but expeditious investigations, including the issuance of arrest warrants against those primarily responsible,” warned the representative of Argentina, Diego Emilio Sadofschi, during the 24th Assembly of States Parties to the ICC.

The ICC Prosecutor’s Office announced that it will close its office in Caracas due to the lack of “real progress” in Venezuela in terms of “complementarity”, not confirming serious investigations into the crimes reported by the victims before the court.

The representative of Argentina assured that the Venezuelan situation has worsened “even more” after the “fraudulent elections of July 2024”, which is why he considers “immediate attention” necessary.

Likewise, he regretted the “little progress” since the ICC Prosecutor’s Office formally opened the investigation in November 2021 into alleged crimes against humanity committed in Venezuela.

However, he indicated that they should not block consensus in the Assembly, which is being held until December 6 in The Hague. He stressed that this “should not be interpreted as a gesture towards Venezuela”, but rather as proof of Argentina’s “commitment” to the ICC and the functioning of the Assembly itself, particularly in the negotiations on countries in default.

In response, the Venezuelan ambassador Héctor Constant accused the Government of Javier Milei of “politicizing” the assembly in a “high-sounding manner” to attack “in an inopportune manner” the legitimacy of the administration of Nicolás Maduro.

In addition, he called that country’s conduct in multilateral organizations “shameful.” He pointed out that Argentine representatives have recently voted against several UN resolutions on human rights, including one adopted on November 20 on torture and cruel treatment, which, he assured, contradicts regional commitments and positions it as “a false defender of human rights.”

The ambassador also said that Venezuela will be able to meet its financial obligations to the ICC once the “illegal unilateral coercive measures” against the country are lifted.

“We are aware of the particular sensitivity in the case of unilateral coercive measures, knowing that the Court today, unfortunately, is also a victim of these practices that violate international law,” added Constant, in reference to the sanctions that Donald Trump’s administration issued against nine ICC officials for issuing arrest warrants against representatives of the Government of Israel, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

*Journalism in Venezuela is carried out in a hostile environment for the press with dozens of legal instruments in place to punish the word, especially the laws “against hate”, “against fascism” and “against the blockade.” This content was written taking into consideration the threats and limits that, consequently, have been imposed on the dissemination of information from within the country.
