Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero and his Chilean counterpart, Antonia Urrejola, agreed on the need to advance in joint projects for the development of lithium and They agreed to hold a future meeting of the presidents of both countries plus Bolivia, to discuss the issue.
In this sense, Cafiero and Urrejola postulated as “strategic” the development of the lithium value chain, focusing on the triangle of Argentina, Chile and Bolivia (considered the largest reserve in the world).
“With the idea of generating a common governance strategy on lithium, both foreign ministers agreed to a future trilateral presidential meeting to advance on this issue,” accurate Foreign Ministry in a statement.
On the occasion, the officials addressed the guidelines for future joint cooperation and highlighted the importance of adding value, environmental and social governance, and the education and training of human resources, in line with the recent creation of the Binational Working Group of lithium and salt flats.
Chile indicated its interest in knowing the Argentine experience of YPF Lithium, whose objective is to integrate the entire mineral value chain.
In a meeting held at the Palacio San Martín, both foreign ministers also discussed the bilateral political, economic and commercial agenda, and progressed especially in energy and mining issues.
In addition to lithium, “energy integration and the transition to renewable energies are two of the main issues of interest for both nations, especially the trade in natural gas and LNG, electrical interconnection and the promotion of cooperation in the field of hydrogen”specified the Foreign Ministry.
They also highlighted the CELAC as a central priorityl to strengthen regional integration and considered it necessary to continue promoting greater physical border integration.
To conclude, Cafiero reaffirmed that Argentina considers the link with Chile as a priority axis and of strategic importance.
