Arequipa regional government transfers Majes Siguas II to the Central Government

He (CRA) approved the transfer of theto the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri). The measure was approved with eight votes in favor and six against.

Previously, the Regional Government of Arequipa (GORE Arequipa) and the Autonomous Authority of Majes (Autodema) issued a statement in which they expressed their support for the agreement and their opposition to politicizing the important project. The document also states that all the observations were raised by the Regional Council of Arequipa.

“For this reason, the Regional Council has the authority to authorize the Regional Government to sign the Agreement with Midagri and thus immediately begin the works of the Commissioning and Intermediate Basin; thereby unblocking the project, making it a reality and, most importantly, reducing the risk of this infrastructure collapsing and generating a regional and national catastrophe. This, considering that one of the fundamental reasons for this transfer is that the regional government does not have the resources to carry out these works, nor does it have the authority to borrow and execute them under other modalities,” he indicates.

The Ministry of Agriculture welcomed the approval of the transfer of the project and said it renews its commitment to promote projects and investments.

“In this way, our government renews its commitment to promote projects and investments that consolidate Peru’s economic growth,” he said.

He Minister of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), Ángel Manero explained that the works could begin in the second half of 2025 and Majes II in 2026.
