In the town of Jachaña, in the Arequipa province of Caylloma, María Belén was one of the most promising students. Despite her limited financial resources, due to her long hours of study, she managed to stay among the top positions in her San Francisco de Asís school. This performance would be rewarded in the short term.
The 17-year-old girl, who was affiliated with the Juntos programwon a full scholarship from the National Scholarship and Educational Credit Program (Pronabec). This student financial support from Scholarship 18, will allow you to study the Occupational Health and Safety Management degree at the TECSUP Higher Education InstituteThe road to reach this long-awaited goal was not easy at all.
Maria Belen lost her father when she was little, so its Mother Luisa Mendoza, a quechua-speaking womanhad to take care of her 10 children. Like her siblings, the young woman helped her mother raise animals in her native Jachaña at 4310 meters above sea level, to provide basic services and food. But Luisa knew that, to escape poverty, her daughter had to study hard. This is why María Belén always maintained a high level of academic achievement during her time at school.
In this town, 12 hours away on a dirt road from the city of Arequipa, there are no higher education institutions. As in most remote towns in the country, families must give up what little they have so that young people can go out to study and make their way in the cities.
The family received a visit from a local manager of Juntos, who informed them about Pronabec and guided the young woman through all the procedures for applying for Beca 18.
