The dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo has confined a group of political prisoners to silence their voices for denouncing human rights violations in Nicaragua. Political commentator Jaime Arellano and former presidential candidate Noel Vidaurre are two opponents who were subjected to political trials and are under house arrest.

The prisoner of conscience presented constant low blood pressure problems and they feared he might have a heart attack due to his condition. Arellano has been under house arrest since June 24, 2021 when he was arrested. In July of this year, it was reported that Arellano cannot walk and is lying down due to severe headaches and constant dizziness.
The commentator was sentenced by the Ortega justice to 13 years in prison for conspiracy to undermine, spread false news, through information and communication technology.
Noel Vidaurre was also detained on July 24, 2021, after he was “interviewed” at the Public Ministry (MP) where he would have been threatened with applying “Law 1055” or Sovereignty Law. He was tried and sentenced to nine years in prison.
Vidaurre intended to compete as a candidate for the Presidency of Nicaragua in the elections of November 7, 2021, where Daniel Ortega won for the fourth consecutive term.
