A joint study of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Stanford University confirmed with experimental evidence that using algorithmic assistance when writing a resume can significantly increase job opportunities.
According to the findings, applicants who used artificial intelligence to improve their resume writing were 8% more likely to be hired and also received 8.4% higher salaries than those who did not use automated help.

Almost half a million applicants and a controlled experiment
The research, titled ‘Algorithmic Writing Assistance on Jobseekers’ Resumes Increases Hires’, was prepared by the economists Emma van Inwegen, Zanele Munyikwa and John J. Hortonlinked to MIT and Stanford.
The work was developed on a database of 480,948 active applicants on a digital employment platform, becoming one of the largest experiments carried out so far on the real impact of artificial intelligence on the labor market.

The researchers designed a randomized experiment: One group of candidates were offered an algorithmic tool that suggested improvements to their resume (from grammar and spelling to clarity, tone and structure), while another group continued writing their resume without assistance.

By comparing the results, the group that used the tool had better hiring rates, higher income, and a more positive perception from employers.
More clarity, more opportunities
According to the study, improved writing helped candidates better communicate their competencieswhich increased the chances of passing the selection filters.
“Using algorithmic assistance can help applicants express their skills more effectively and reduce bias or premature judgments based on typing errors.”, point out the authors.
Additionally, employers reported no significant differences in performance or satisfaction with workers hired across the group.treaty”, suggesting that the benefit comes not from misleading presentation, but from more accurate and professional communication.

Another key finding was that the greatest benefits were seen among candidates with originally weaker resumes or with more errors, which indicates that AI can help reduce access gaps in selection processes.

AI as a tool for labor inclusion
Beyond the numbers, the authors (van Inwegen, Munyikwa and Horton) warn that artificial intelligence could become an employment equity tool, especially in contexts where the quality of the language or presentation of the resume can bias hiring decisions.
“Algorithmic writing is not a substitute for candidate skills, but can serve as a way to level the playing field”, explain the researchers.
However, they also recommend caution: the study focused on a digital context and does not guarantee the same effects in all markets or types of employment. Furthermore, the benefits depend on responsible use and the type of assistance, since the tool tested was limited to linguistic suggestions, not to generate false or exaggerated information.
