Considered one of the most recognized natural wonders in the country, Malabrigo’s wave now has a mural that celebrates the pride of being custodians of a unique phenomenon in the world. For decades, this wave – the longest on the planet – has challenged the most prominent surfers, becoming a symbol of identity and international attraction.
The intervention included the painting of housing facades, the recovery of the floor of the main street and an artistic mural developed from participatory workshops with neighbors, leaders and merchants of the local market. In total, 270 m² were intervened and 182 gallons of paint specially adapted to the climatic conditions of the place were used.
The work is entitled “A song to the wave and the spirit of Puerto Chicama” and represents the sea, fishing, history and cultural heritage of Malabrigo. It highlights the figure of an ancestral character about a totora knight, accompanied by market scenes, fishing and tourist activities, and natural elements such as flowers and marine life. The composition was developed by the Artistic Energy Association from supplies collected in community listening sessions.
Arcoiris Urban Art Project
In this way, the port of Malabrigo, located in the province of Ascope, region of La Libertad, adds to the list of localities intervened by the Arcoíris project, an urban art initiative of Qroma that seeks to recover public spaces with the active participation of the communities. On this occasion, the municipal market and Arica Street, both key traffic and meeting points, were transformed with color to strengthen the local sense of identity.
In addition to revitalizing the spaces, the intervention included a volunteer day that brought together 45 people: QROMA, RATE AND CONTRIBUTION WORKERS, Municipal Officials, Neighbors and Children of the NGO Surf Therapy. The facades of 18 homes were painted, promoting a collective work for the benefit of the neighborhood and promoting the care of public space.
“Malabrigo is not only a fishing development engine; it is a community that values its history, its culture and its surroundings. This intervention is an opportunity to reconnect with what makes us unique,” said Antonio Olortegui, legal manager and corporate issues of Rate, the driving company of the project.
The Rainbow project is an initiative of QROMA, developed with its brand of Jet Paints and in alliance with organizations such as Rate and Contributes, the Innovation and Social Impact Platform of the Breca Group. Since its creation, the project has intervened spaces in 2 countries, 23 communities and more than 352,000 m² of murdered surface, using more than 10,900 gallons of paint and generating a positive impact on more than 38,000 people.
“This is not just a color action. It is an invitation to recover the public as a meeting place, to build collective memory from art, and to strengthen community links through spaces that represent us,” said César Castillo, professional business director of QROMA.
