MADRID, Spain.- The platform Cuban civic group Archipiélago made a call not to go to the polls in the next “elections” on November 27 on the island.
“We consider that the options of NOT GOING TO THE POLLS, VOTING BLANK or VOIDING THE BALLOT, are a valid expression of rejection of an electoral model that does not allow a legitimate representation of our diversity. And this negative vote (adding the three options) has been growing in recent years,” said Archipiélago through a release.
After recalling that the Cuban electoral model is designed so that the single party and its institutions maintain absolute control over the destinies of the country, he pointed out that boycotting the “elections” could be “a magnificent opportunity to say aloud to the regime and to the international community, that the dictatorship no longer has the majorities it boasted of for decades.”
“We know that fear, apathy and exhaustion cause some to lose faith in the possibility of a Change. But we can’t give up. Cuba deserves that the word DIGNITY not be synonymous with repeating tired slogans on an empty stomach or having to resign itself to a failed, authoritarian and perverse government. Cuba deserves FREEDOM in a big way, with each and every one of its letters”, he highlighted.
The Archipelago declaration also mentions that a part of the Cuban opposition insists on presenting candidates for November 27; but, he recalls, the only experience in this regard was in 2015, when two opponents managed to get their names on the ballots.
“Both were defeated by a wide margin and publicly acknowledged their defeats. By the year 2017, the Candidacy Commissions and the State Security would ensure that not a single opponent managed to become a candidate”, he pointed out.
Therefore, Archipelago insists that the solution would be not to go to the polls. However, he points out that if, finally, an opponent managed to pass all the filters and be nominated, he would receive the full support of the platform.
