In the last hours, the Chamber of Senators unanimously approved a minute of communication to the Executive Power through which it requests the government to send to Parliament a bill to exempt 19 products from the basic food basket from VAT, such as way to combat inflation and loss of real wages.
It is also proposed to channel the exemption through the use of electronic means of payment, in order to guarantee that the benefits effectively reach consumers.

This Wednesday, Minister Arbeleche told the press that the proposal will be analyzed, as she analyzes all proposals. But she clarified: “It is one thing to take a quick measure and another to analyze seriously, responsibly, how to allocate the resources of all Uruguayans, which are scarce, because we have a large debt and we have to be very careful.”
He added that the government seeks to adopt “focused measures that really reach the most vulnerable people and that, in addition, can be sustained over time.”
“We are in a context of global uncertainty, we have not come out of Covid, which also constituted an economic crisis and now the war situation between Russia and Ukraine. In this context, sanity prevails more than ever, analyze and be responsible with the answers that are given, “said Arbeleche.
The government has sent two bills to Parliament, one to exempt VAT on strip roast, and another for noodles and white bread.
It also decided to advance to July an adjustment of 3% in pensions and 2% in the salaries of public officials.
