In the parliamentary session of the National Assembly (AN), the draft agreement was unanimously approved to celebrate, on August 9, the International Day of Indigenous Peoples. It was discussed and analyzed by parliamentarians in an ordinary session of the AN. The date marks the day of the first meeting, in 1982, of the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights.
Indigenous peoples are heirs to a great linguistic and cultural diversity, as well as ancestral customs and traditions in several Latin American countries. However, despite their diversity, most indigenous peoples share important commonalities.
Indigenous peoples share similar challenges to defend the recognition and protection of fundamental rights. Among them, the way of relating in their traditional territories, their environment and the will to preserve forms of organization, cultural, social and economic values that are sometimes different from the norms that prevail in society.
Indigenous peoples are arguably among the most vulnerable and disadvantaged populations in the world today. The international community recognizes that they need special measures to protect their rights, maintain their cultures and ways of life. This international day is an opportunity to raise awareness of their situation.
