Appearances of candidates to preside over the CNDH conclude: what's next?

Claims to Rosario Piedra Ibarra

In meetings with the legislators of the Justice and Human Rights commissions of the Upper House, each candidate tried to convince the senators to support him in the search to head the CNDH; However, the appearance that stood out for the claims was that of Rosario Piedra Ibarra, which took place on Friday, October 25.

During the meeting, opposition legislators questioned her about the way in which she came to head the CNDH in 2019; also for his defense of “militarization” in Mexico; for not filing any unconstitutionality action before the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation and for seeking re-election when – they accused – that is contrary to what Morena is seeking.

In his defense, Piedra Ibarra pointed out that it was false that militarization existed in Mexico by replicating Morena’s same argument: that the Armed Forces depend on a civilian command and that only during the government of the PAN member Felipe Calderón was there an “improper” use of those security forces.

The daughter of the founder of Eureka, Rosario Ibarra de Piedra, also asserted that in Mexico there are no extrajudicial executions or disappearances by the State, as “was the repressive State that, for more than 70 years, created anti-constitutional police to persecute the dissidents, clandestine prisons where people were subject to forced disappearance.”

The Constitution allows the re-election of whoever heads the CNDH, so Rosario Piedra Ibarra can return to occupy that position for five more years.

What’s next?

At the end of the appearances of the 48 candidates, the Human Rights and Justice commissions must choose a shortlist of candidates, from which the person who will occupy the position of head of the CNDH for the next five years will be chosen.

Subsequently, the Plenary of the Senate must elect, from the shortlist, the incumbent; For this, the vote in favor of two thirds of the members present is necessary; That is, if all 128 attend, 86 votes in favor will be necessary.

Voting will be done by ballot, which means that it is done by means of a ballot that each senator will deposit in a ballot box.
