The absence of Castillo, who played eight games in the South American qualifiers and Ecuador’s last friendlies, was one of the surprises in the call of the Argentine coach Gustavo Alfaro.
The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) did not specify the reasons why the winger was marginalized from the list, who was also beaten in the last game against Iraq.

The claims for the Castillo case began in May of this year when the Chilean Football Federation filed a complaint with the FIFA for an alleged improper alignment of the player. However, the highest body of international football dismissed the complaint in two instances.
The complaint escalated to TAS, that last week in its resolution it indicated that although the FEF used “a document that contained false information” (Castillo’s passport), the player “was eligible to participate in the preliminary qualifying phase” of Qatar-2022, since it recognizes that a player’s nationality “is determined by national law”.
