The Panamanian Association of Business Executives, APEDE, a group founded on the principles of democracy and institutionality, has been closely following the events surrounding the presidential elections in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela; in relation to which we wish to express our deep concern and dissatisfaction.
We observe with dismay the accusations by a large part of Venezuelan society of electoral irregularities that may result in the popular will being ignored.
These actions not only undermine the confidence of the Venezuelan people in their democratic institutions, but also have a negative impact on the region and represent a serious attack on the fundamental values of transparency and electoral justice that must govern any democratic process. In addition, by deepening the internal conflict in Venezuela, the problem of migration of nationals of that country increases, severely affecting the region and specifically Panama.
In this context, we would like to express our support for the government of Panama for its courageous and firm decision to suspend diplomatic relations with the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. This act of solidarity and defense of democratic principles is an example of commitment to freedom and justice, values that we deeply share and which must be echoed by Panamanian society and the international community.
