Anvisa approves registration of 100% national vaccine against dengue

Anvisa approves registration of 100% national vaccine against dengue

The Minister of Health, Alexandre Padilha, announced this Wednesday (26) the registration by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) of the dengue vaccine (Butantan-DV) produced by the Butantan Institute. The intention is to start applying doses in 2026, free of charge, through the Unified Health System (SUS). Anvisa approves registration of 100% national vaccine against dengue

According to the Butantan Institute, there are already 1 million units of the dengue vaccine ready for distribution. This is the first single-dose vaccine in the world. Butantan estimates that more than 30 million doses will be available by mid-2026.

“Today is a day of joy, a victory for the vaccine, a victory for science, a victory for cooperation between the Brazilian SUS and its public institutions that are spread across the country, including the Butantan Institute”.

Padilha, alongside the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, highlighted the quality of the dengue vaccine.

“We already know the published data, we know the safety of this vaccine. We are talking about a hat trick: it is a 100% Brazilian vaccine, it has broad protection capacity and it is just one dose.”

The new vaccine will be integrated into the National Immunization Program (PNI). According to the government, the ministry will present the news this Thursday (27) to the Tripartite Commission, formed by state and municipal health secretaries, as well as the incorporation strategy.

“We want to start using this vaccine at the beginning of the 2026 vaccination calendar”, revealed the minister.

According to Priscilla Perdicaris, executive secretary of Health of the State of São Paulo, Brazil had, in 2025, 866 thousand cases of dengue fever and 1,108 confirmed deaths. “Even before approval, Butantan rushed to produce 1 million doses, because we knew that these were robust studies and that they would be approved.” For Perdicaris, it is very important that Butantan-DV is a single dose: “For those of us involved in the operation, this completely changes the story of the game: it facilitates logistics and increases population support.”

Governor Tarcísio de Freitas highlighted the importance of the new vaccine: “being a single dose will help us a lot from the point of view of logistics and vaccination coverage. Unfortunately, we still lose many lives to dengue and it is a scenario that we will be able to quickly reverse with a 100% Brazilian vaccine”.
