The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education represents one of “the most significant changes in recent decades in the way in which knowledge is generated, accessed and transmitted,” establishes an analysis by the National Association of Universities and Higher Education Institutions (Anuies) on the subject, which was coordinated by experts from the Ibero-American University (Ibero).

He details that the emergence of algorithmic systems capable of generating text, images or videos, solving complex problems and evaluating patterns or personalizing learning environments, “has questioned the core foundations of the university as an institution.”

Dr. Cimenna Chao Rebolledo, director of Strategic Planning and Innovation at Ibero, told The Day that AI will permeate “professional life in all fields” and is already influencing “how we learn and teach.”

He warns that this is a technology that “has the potential not only to modify what we do, but also how we think and who we are as subjects in an automated world mediated by non-human intelligences.”

Therefore, because AI “is going to intersect with all disciplinary fields, then we must begin to think about programs and plans that directly incorporate the perspective of artificial intelligence in their curricular offering” and insists that there must be continuous training, both for teachers and students on the subject.

It also advocates achieving “algorithmic sovereignty”, that is, the ability of an entity or country to develop, govern and use its own AI systems based on the training of these technologies with local data, its own infrastructure and under national legal frameworks.

He emphasizes that something fundamental to achieve this is having digital infrastructure, and for this connectivity is essential. In 2023, in the country, 71.7 percent of households had Internet access and individual use was 81.2.

Another key issue is “AI literacy”, so the analysis proposes the establishment of a national strategy, since it is important for students, teachers and citizens to understand, use and criticize these technologies.
