In this sense, Taveras Guzmán highlighted that in the country, “Luckily we don’t have large organized gangs like other Central American countries; but here it comes from the structural violence that creates poverty”.

For the senator, “drug trafficking will always create violence, since in the neighborhoods there is a whole way of surviving through micro-trafficking”.

The legislator stressed that the current government, even before taking office, had already studied the issue of violence trying to find a solution. However, he specified that the plan to transform the National Police “it is an essential point to reduce violence, but it is not everything; we must end structural violence”.

The also president of the Permanent Commission of Justice and Human Rights said that despite the fact that the Forfeiture Law is a mandate of the 2010 Constitution, its approval has not been successful.

Likewise, he stated that together with his work team they adapted the content of the aforementioned law to the conditions of the country due to its importance to strengthen democratic institutions and the fight against organized crime and corruption.

He recalled that the Asset Forfeiture Law persecutes the assets of those who have committed a crime and that are of illicit origin.

Regarding the Referendum law, he stated that it is not in the Senate of the Republic but in the Chamber of Deputies.

As a result of the complaint of the Legal Consultant of the Executive Power for projects that are not walking in the hemicycle; he said: “we have a bicameral congress and many of us have complained about many projects that are approved in the Senate and pass through the Chamber of Deputies and vice versa, we have to find a solution to that”.
