The story

The history of aviation in Nariño began in 1921, when the Italian pilot Ferrucio Guicciardi made the first flights in the region. However, it was decades later, under the initiative of local leaders, which consolidated the idea of building a modern airport. The inauguration of the Antonio Nariño airport in 1979 marked a before and after in the connectivity of the department, facilitating the transport of passengers and loading to different destinations of the country.

The first landing in this terminal was surrounded by expectation and celebrations. Which demonstrated the potential of the region to integrate to national development through a solid air infrastructure.

Chachagüí: Airport Home

The municipality of Chachagüí, located at an altitude of 1,982 meters above sea level, is characterized by its tempered climate, with average temperatures between 13 ° C and 24 ° C. According to recent estimates, it has an approximate population of 4,900 inhabitants. Although it is a small municipality, it has urbanized areas and is a strategic place for its proximity to the capital of the department.

The journey between Chachagüí and Pasto takes approximately 40 minutes by car, which facilitates the access of travelers to the airport. In addition, the municipality is surrounded by mountainous landscapes, typical of the Colombian Andes.

The dangerous but ingenious track

Antonio Nariño airport is known by its track, built on a high plateau that resembles a land carrier. This location, although strategic, presents several challenges. Airport altitude reduces air density, which can affect aircraft performance. In addition, surrounding mountains generate unpredictable air currents, complicating take -off and landing maneuvers.

For these reasons, this airport is considered one of the most demanding for pilots in Colombia. Crews receive specialized training to operate in it, and airlines usually implement weight restrictions and schedules to guarantee flight safety.

Over the years, multiple modernization works have been carried out at Antonio Nariño airport. These include the extension, rehabilitation of the track and the modernization of the control tower. These investments have allowed to improve infrastructure and mitigate the risks associated with their geographical location.
