Santo Domingo.- Senator and businessman Antonio Marte suggested on Wednesday that public transport and cargo drivers be tested for drugs to avoid accidents such as the one that occurred early Saturday morning in Azua, in which six people died and 31 were injured.
Marte, representative of Santiago Rodríguez, recalled that he always tests drivers of the National Confederation of Transport (Conatra), which he heads, but he complained that other leaders of the sector do not do the same.
“It is useless for Conatra to carry out these tests if other transport companies do not do so. We carry out tests, but others do not comply with them. It should be done even before a driver leaves a station to make a trip,” he recommended.

He also complained about the use of sidewalks in Dominican cities, and recommended taking drastic measures to address this problem.
The legislator spoke at the Senate of the Republic’s session on Wednesday.
Many passenger transport drivers, including motorcycle taxi drivers, are drug users, according to citizen complaints.
