Antonio Gershenson: To comply or not to comply, that is the risk

P

for the second For the world’s billionaire, Elon Musk, the risk of investing his money should not be a problem. Perhaps the losses, however large they may be, can be easily recovered. In some way, the businessman is at risk, that’s why he is a millionaire, because of his investment strategy.

However, Musk, in addition to his millions and the countless businesses that the wealthy man owns, also owns something intangible, immeasurable and definitive: determination. We are referring to the style of generating and managing a large investment that will translate into greater wealth for the citizen of three countries: South Africa, the United States and Canada.

And if the growth of his fortune depended on the target country of the investment, he would not hesitate to acquire the nationality of that country. At some point he could have applied for Chinese naturalization, since his investments were enormous there.

Tesla has planned to build a Megapacks plant in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China, with an investment of around 207 million dollars. The superfactory will occupy around 20 hectares and is expected to begin operating in the first quarter of 2025.

His position as a world millionaire allows him (he is sure) to take risks on any investment, anywhere, and of course, to back out of it, perhaps without caring about the movements generated by the project; perhaps without taking into account the needs and expectations of thousands of people who were excited by a great job opportunity, a chance to improve their finances and a better future.

For the millionaire, this – I repeat – may not be a factor. But he does take into account the size of his profit. In fact, we can almost say that prestige is secondary for the South African. It is no longer vital to his career as an entrepreneur.

Of course, the losses will not be borne by their companies; on the contrary, they will surely be able to squeeze a little more out of the country where their investment became an encouraging promise for the local economy.

The big losers will be the governments that are left hanging by the suspension of their investment. This is the case of the state of Nuevo Leon. We are again dependent on what happens in the United States after its presidential elections. This is where we are once again, clearly, dependent on foreign policy. We are definitely a world away from achieving economic independence and autonomy.

In capitalism, of course, there is no such independence. And of course, in any other system of economic production, we all depend on each other. But, without a doubt, at least the utility and benefit for the population is the most important thing.

As an ultra-millionaire, the temptation to intervene politically in the affairs of countries has not been far from Musk’s decisions. Now, as if he did not know what awaits the reactionary Venezuelan opposition, the businessman is supporting it, showing off as a benefactor for the people of Hugo Chavez’s country.

Elon Musk has a huge tool at his disposal: his X platform. He has already flooded the spaces by betting on the opposition candidate with the certainty that Maduro will be defeated.

With the millions he has in his banks and companies, what harm would it do to Elon if the current president Nicolás Maduro continued? It is not typical of this millionaire to care about the well-being of the Venezuelan population or any other.

Through the social network X, Musk made his message of support for Maduro’s opposition candidate go viral. The businessman received thousands of responses I likeas well as reposts and in just 30 minutes it garnered more than 50 thousand reactions among its followers.

Now we have the millionaires attacking the attempts to clean up the democratic exercise in our Latin American nations. Openly, they show, as in the case of Musk, the interference in the decisions of the people.

We are sure that he does it to tell the world I am all powerful because my toy X and my millions allow me to. He intervenes by pretending to be benevolent towards the Venezuelan people, not because he is moved by the great economic limitations that have been generated by the blockades of his peers in the United States, Canada, England and so many others, not because he does not even know the history or the political background of the country. Just as he does not know them in the case of Mexico and the state of Nuevo Leon. For that, he has his team of strategists of financial investment and cyberspace. The decision revolves around how much he risks his money, no matter what benefits it will generate.

In the case of the Bolivarian country, we hope for the best solution and for democracy to triumph, just as it has done in our country, a place where Musk’s investment has been a real deception.

On a separate note, I would like to thank Professor Antonio Arista Romero, a great promoter of the Prepa Popular, for his commitment to university education, the democratization of our country and for his legitimate interest in our political career as a trade unionist.
