Antonio Gershenson: The Last Cry

H

Today we will have a reunion with those moments shared years ago. Thousands of people from all over the country will be present for a special Grito de Independencia, not only because it is nostalgic, but also because it is hopeful.

And, despite being the last we will hear from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, this patriotic celebration rekindles the motivation of those first days of his six-year term. The expectations continue, as well as the desire to continue making history. We have made progress, whether they want to recognize it or not.

In 2018, a transformative stage began in which millions of citizens participated. And, despite the atmosphere of constant aggression, fueled by ill-gotten money and supported by those selfish characters, neoliberal leaders and, frankly, unpatriotic people, they could not stop the steps towards the Fourth Transformation (4T).

The opposition groups to the 4T will have to settle for what they have. It will no longer be possible to continue with their aspirations for millionaire grandeurs. It has already been demonstrated that the country is a source of wealth for its entire population and not just for the benefit of a few.

Opposition groups will have to join the great movement for the economic, political, social and cultural transformation of the country because the balance that we have experienced in the left-wing policy of the present government can be continued for the next one and those to come.

An example of this progress is the return of trains. It is a great satisfaction for those of us who have insisted that, as part of a true change for the quality of life and environmental improvement, the railway system is the best option. During this six-year term, its long-awaited rescue began.

What in other countries is a way of travelling on a daily basis is starting to become a tangible possibility in Mexico. We have multiple examples around the world of the importance of this type of transport. Among the most spectacular are, without a doubt, the high-speed trains manufactured in China.

During the neoliberal period, one of the country’s most important industries was irresponsibly halted: the railway industry. If it had continued decades ago, we would have a vast network today that would cover the entire national territory.

The plan of the president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, is to build more train lines. The benefit for the mobility of the population will be enormous, since commercial and other expectations are multiplied by the advantage of traveling greater distances in a short time.

However, not only the construction of more railway routes is a feasible task for the next six-year term. We are looking for the best options to access clean energy sources that will satisfy in the shortest possible time the needs of a pollution-free transport that the population is waiting for, including the most distant ones. But that will also allow us to comply with the environmental commitments that Mexico has signed.

We trust in the foreign policy that Claudia Sheinbaum will implement during her administration. So far, the approach with future industrial investors is positive. We are certain that coercive deals by countries such as the United States or Canada will not find a place in the next government.

We trust that traditional Mexican pacifist diplomacy, recognized throughout the world, will continue to protect national sovereignty. We have already experienced that the defense of our internal policy is a guarantee for enforcing respect for our country and that commercial threats, and even military ones, have not prospered and will not do so in the future.

Very important for the next administration is the protection that will be provided by a judicial system free of corruption and abuses that during the last 50 years have damaged the image of legal professionals in all its branches.

The recent judicial reform approved last Wednesday will give the citizenry a qualitative character of effective democracy and will be a demonstration of the capacity for responsibility and maturity, both of the new restructured institutions and of their personnel and authorities. But, above all, the popular election of judges, magistrates and ministers will be a demonstration of civility on the part of all the citizens of which we are a part.
