Antonio Gershenson*: My privileges

N

or we have wrong when, throughout our lives, those of us who did it have fought for all the rights that correspond to us. We are not wrong when we appeal to justice, when we face adversity to reach our goal. This has been the last 60 years of organization, of dangers, of searching for the best way to achieve it. And, thus, the privileges are clearer than ever.

Today, luck has caught up with me. I suffered one of those events that darken the panorama. My family and I face moments of uncertainty that, although in some way we glimpse them, we wait for them and, daily we cross the fingers of both hands, with the hope that they never happen, in the end, we are victims of those small carelessness that change our lives. life.

We refer to those events such as accidents, unexpected illnesses or inexplicable situations that momentarily stop the dynamics of our lives. However, only until they happen do we look back at the real reality, not the one described in countless graphs, percentages, statistics, etc.

And, unfortunately, all over the world we have the same situation. We are the old population who will resent this truth, which is, in fact, overwhelming. So, we ask ourselves, why is a condition as dangerous as fractures increasing?

We do not want to speculate, but if epidemiology, prevention from public health, early education aimed at reducing injuries to the skeletal system and the increase in care at this vulnerable stage has continued to advance, why are the high rates of trauma like bone fractures? What programs are being designed for the transition of the youth population into adulthood and, subsequently, into old age?

Campaigns are not enough to prevent pathological situations, as a whole. Yes, in case those for the education of older adults have already been put into practice that seek to reduce accidents that immobilize people, we believe that there is a lack of campaigns so that families that have elderly members, such as Surely it is the vast majority of Mexican women, who manage to train, if we can say so, the youngest members to know what to do in the event that their elderly relative has an accident.

It is very important and extremely necessary to have accessories, devices and, above all, assistance techniques that can avoid any collateral problems due to a fall that puts the physical integrity of the injured person at risk.

But, in addition, knowing, more or less, that unbearable and often confusing paperwork for people who attend a health center with their family member. This administrative step, in most cases, is incredibly complicated.

And, unfortunately, in hospital centers it is difficult for medical and paramedical staff to have the patience to explain precisely what procedure must be carried out, without wasting time.

To tell the truth, it is the paramedical staff, generally, who are most aware of each patient’s situation.

Let us remember that the world population is aging rapidly. The increase in life expectancy brings with it public health situations that must be addressed urgently. And, in our country, that panorama is still not very clear.

We require better specialists, people trained to resist the temptation to ignore the complex needs of each patient. That unfortunately still does not happen in our health system. There are few cases in which the coordination of the specialties do their work truly thoroughly and without taking any situation for granted. Generally, the culprit is the patient and impunity is the right of medical personnel. The new generation of specialists, in our opinion, and because we have experienced it, lack a true ethical sense for their profession. Why might this happen? In principle, let’s review the conditions under which they practice their profession. Even in health centers and private or public hospitals, the hours are overwhelming.

In the last six years, more than 180 million fractures have occurred worldwide. According to the WHO, this figure has increased, since 1990, by a percentage of 33.4 points. In our opinion, a very high figure, considering the advancement of global technology and the increase in, as we said previously, the number of professionals seeking the specialty of traumatology, orthopedics and rehabilitation.

Let’s look at another aspect, women continue to be the most affected population. A high percentage of this gender, aged 65 and older, have suffered at least one fall, and the most serious thing is that they do not go to the doctor to counteract the most harmful effects, such as the reduction of cracks under the control of specialists.

Figures from information sources of the national health system indicate that women over 79 years of age are the main affected. Let’s hope that the studies to generate trauma prevention programs continue to advance until we reduce the numbers we have so far.

Lifestyles are one of the main objectives to generate a culture of mass care for the elderly population. Respect for labor rights is another point that must be observed, without omitting any of them.

We are the citizens who demand, and will have to continue to do so, when it comes to asserting our privileges, that is, our human rights.
