Antonio Gershenson: France is liberated

as we can observe, inconsistency in the Judiciary is the basis of their livelihood. The combination of ideology, intransigence and corruption, generates a kind of arch brotherhood where money allows them to be judge and party.

There is fear of expropriation by transnational companies, of course it only affects them and the corrupt officials who live off the profits they make.

The advantages of private companies, national or foreign, are: obtaining raw material at low cost, paying unfair salaries, and not only that, many of them offer illicit and disadvantageous contracts for local personnel. That is the big business, they protect themselves with permits granted by high officials, the taxes they pay, if they do, are minimal. Some of them are Intergen, Genermex, Grupo México, Enel Green Power and Iberdrola (in Mexico), of course.

It has already been proven that, on countless occasions, the law is on the side of the defendant. This has recently happened with the Spanish Iberdrola, for example, since the payment of the fine of 9 thousand 145 million pesos, which the federal government determined, was temporarily suspended.

This is how they make multimillion-dollar profits: get official permission and impose conditions to continue investing for the development of the industry of the country where they are allowed to settle.

Notwithstanding the Oil Expropriation of 1938 and the Electricity Expropriation in 1960, the benefit for the population has not reached one hundred percent coverage. In addition to the fact that the voracity of the large energy corporations has been strengthened by the neoliberal period, in such a way that the battle for energy sovereignty continues.

Defenders of the free market when President Andrés Manuel López Obrador presented the bill for the electrical reform. Criticism multiplied and attempts were made to hinder, at any cost, the Executive’s proposal.

The examples are spreading, the expropriations and nationalizations have to be carried out when the abuse is already intolerable. Mexico took the first step to free itself from energy theft and recover what had been achieved with the electrical expropriation decreed by President Adolfo López Mateos. He measured that the antipatriots did not care, who were returning to the transnational companies, the achievements obtained in previous six-year terms.

Those antipatriots have names and surnames: José López Portillo, Miguel de la Madrid, Carlos Salinas de Gortari, Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de León, Vicente Fox Quesada, Felipe Calderón Hinojosa and Enrique Peña Nieto; all graduates and former neoliberal presidents.

In Europe, some countries have already questioned the abuse of private energy companies to the detriment of the population, aggravating the economic situation in which they have fallen.

There, France has already taken the right step. The main electricity company in the country, Electrica de France (EDF) will be fully nationalized. Although the advantage for the government of Emmanuel Macron, who will now be accused of being a communist, is that he already had more than 80 percent in favor of him. Similarly, other countries are getting ready to stop paying privately for the essential energy resource so that their economies do not collapse.

In the case of the dispute over invading the world of clean energy systems, France is the nation that can speak of extensive nuclear experience. They have verified that any technique is useful and safe if the instructions are followed to the letter and the security codes are respected with all senses.

Regarding the example that the Macron government is giving, the opinion of those who propose to rescue energy sovereignty in Spain, and impose sanctions on Iberdrola, say the following: “What is relevant is that it breaks with the privatization trend and opens the doors for others to countries have their public electricity…” The Spanish Constitution guarantees that all the wealth of the country in its different forms and whatever its ownership, is subordinated to the general interest (article 128).

So, these lawful acts, such as expropriation or nationalization, show that the government is not violating the freedom of private companies to do business with those who so wish. The government is against the abuses of predatory companies.

Although, in the case of Mexico, we cannot claim victory. It has already been made clear who are the enemies of development, growth and energy sovereignty, who are their accomplices and who do not want to support the country.

As more governments join this wave of expropriations It will become clear that the needs of the people must be above the economic interests of large private companies.

While in France they celebrate the decision to recover electrical energy sovereignty, in Mexico, a judge decides that Iberdrola’s abuses are not such and that the imposed fine must be suspended to analyze whether it is legal or not.
