There is a great possibility that the Covid-19 vaccine will be applied annually from next year, mainly in the most vulnerable population.
This was announced by Dr. Guillermo Sequera, head of Health Surveillance, pointing out that, once the complete scheme is reached (two doses plus the booster), the Ministry of Health would bet on the application of the anticovid vaccine in a way annually, starting next year.
“We are going to vaccinate just like we do with influenza, mainly for older adults, people who have underlying problems and children. We are going to fine-tune over the remainder of this year to encourage ourselves to make annual vaccines, starting next year, ”said the head of Health Surveillance on Tuesday.
In this regard, he highlighted the need to continue to be vaccinated against the coronavirus in order to avoid the severe form of the disease. “Hopefully, future waves will find us with greater coverage and that the impact of the deceased and hospitalized will be as little as possible,” he said.
Although he said that covid is a virus that affects all ages, the epidemiologist recalled that it hits older adults harder, and that is why Public Health urges the application of the fourth dose for this sector.
In turn, he valued the “favorable” epidemiological scenario that the country is experiencing and that serves as a kind of rest for the population, after two years of restrictions.
On the other hand, Sequera explained that after a significant wave of the Ómicron variant, Paraguay is going through a “plateau” of cases, with the lowest contagion rates since the pandemic entered, in March 2020.
He mentioned that the epidemiological context is very dynamic, since the virus is here to stay, therefore, he insisted on the importance of learning to live with it and activating health care if necessary.
“With the withdrawal of the emergency declaration, we are not saying that the pandemic is over, but the immediate horizon is to take a breath. It is time to rest a little from everything we have lived in the last two years, ”she finally expressed.
