Madrid. Antibodies against covid-19 are maintained for at least 17 months after suffering the disease, according to a study in which 769 professionals from the North Metropolitan Primary Care of the ICS and the Hermanos Trias Hospital participated.
It was also known that the severity of the disease influences the immune response. Those people who suffered the condition seriously, that is, who had to be admitted to a hospital or the Intensive Care Unit, generated more antibodies than those who suffered it with moderate or mild affectations.
The research, which was published in the journal BMC Infectious Diseaseswas carried out with the participation of the North Metropolitan Primary Care of the Catalan Health Institute and the Germans Trias Hospital, among others.
Another of the conclusions reached by the specialists is the significant differences between the sexes. Men generate a higher response when newly infected, that is, they produce more antibodies and more quickly than women. But, over time, the amount of antibodies equals that of women.
To carry out the study, health professionals were followed for 17 months, including both people who were infected with SARS-CoV-2 and others who were not in contact with the virus.
Within this follow-up, blood tests were carried out periodically to study in depth the immune response to the coronavirus, as well as questionnaires to find out in detail the effects that the virus caused to infected people.
The investigation focused on the results provided by IgG(N) antibodies, since these are not altered by vaccination against covid-19. Thus, the immune response generated by infection can be differentiated from that produced by immunization.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization recalled that a year ago omicron was declared a new variant of interest, and warned of the need to continue carrying out SARS-CoV-2 tests, since are declining globally
