The mayor of Maldonado Enrique Antía met with the CEO of Tienda Inglesa, Juan Manuel Parada, and the firm’s lawyer, Fernando De Posadas, who expressed their desire to quickly rebuild the facilities affected by the fire in Punta Shopping. For his part, the communal chief stated that “we must wait to see how the structure responds and what the real damage is.”
Beyond the conviction shown, both representatives of Tienda Inglesa also expressed the importance of having the support of the departmental government to rebuild the store that suffered total losses. In this context, Antía indicated that he received proposals and “gave them forward” although he acknowledged that the work will take at least a year. He added that “we are here to support and this is like in the pandemic that a crisis came suddenly and with imagination we have to find a way out.”
In addition, he pointed out that “the impact for the department of Maldonado has to do with the uncertainty that it generates not only because of the season, but also in relation to the coming winter.”
On the other hand, during the meeting they discussed the situation of the workers that includes about 400 employees of this supermarket chain and a total of 2000 in the entire shopping center.
In this sense, the Minister of Labor and Social Security, Pablo Mieres, announced that the national government will make available all the mechanisms that are within its reach through special unemployment insurance for Punta Shopping workers.
