The Sri Lankan organization Anti-Imperialist Alliance of the Global South urged the United Nations (UN) to take immediate action against the military threat that the United States maintains against Venezuela.
In a letter addressed to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, and signed by the alliance’s coordinator, Uvindu Wijeweera, a call is made for urgent international action to reduce tensions and safeguard peace.
According to the Sri Lankan organization, the call reflects growing concern over recent events involving the United States and their impact on Venezuela’s sovereignty. The group also urged the United Nations to uphold international law and take proactive measures to prevent any military confrontation.
“With civil-military unity and the leadership of the Bolivarian Government, Venezuela resists an unprecedented attack from Washington,” says the document, which denounces attempts to steal natural resources through naval blockades.
For his part, the Venezuelan representative to the UN, Samuel Moncada, warned in the Security Council that the danger does not only hang over his countrybut against all of Latin America. The diplomat assured that Venezuela is the first objective of a larger plan and affirmed that the United States will not allow compliance with international regulations.
Finally, he stressed that the US Government violates international law with operations in the Caribbean under the pretext of the fight against drug trafficking. Moncada pointed out that Washington refuses to show evidence of these acts, as this would provoke global revulsion.
