To meet this goal, the entity is working on the process of purchasing equipment, such as high-performance processors, routers, disks and all the instruments related to the storage capacity of a center with these characteristics, Paz explained. This new infrastructure will require an investment of 8,000,000 dollars.
The Antel Data Center in Pando, Canelones, provides business solutions for sectors such as finance, internet service providers, large commercial companies and information technology firms, among others.
Antel studies location to install new data center in Montevideo
On the other hand, Paz announced that the state company plans the construction of another data center, which will be located in Montevideo, in order to expand the storage capacity and have “geographic redundancy” with Pando (this is how the security strategy is defined to physically distribute the data storage points to protect the investment in infrastructure from events such as fires, for example).
The leader explained that, although the organization is studying where it will locate the new infrastructure in the capital, the intention is to begin building the new data center this year.
“It implies sovereignty, it gives us security in data management and sovereignty in terms of information management,” Paz stressed.
On the other hand, within the framework of strengthening connectivity, Antel installed a 4G radio base at the Artigas Antarctic Scientific Base. This service communicates via satellite with the cellular network and improves communication both between scientists at the Uruguayan base and in surrounding areas.
This technology will meet the current communication needs of the scientific community made up of 60 people who carry out activities during the summer months, as well as the military personnel who keep the base operational throughout the year.
Regional expansion: “When Antel grows, the country grows”
The vice president of Antel, Pablo Álvarez, confirmed that, among the new investments, the strengthening of infrastructure in terms of connectivity and the sale of services, the organization plans to expand in the region, in particular, Argentina and Brazil, where there are subsidiary companies that work well, the leader told Presidential Communication.
This business deployment is supported by high-capacity underwater and terrestrial connectivity, which, together with the Pando device, configures a very favorable system for the country to operate as a digital center (hub), concluded Álvarez.
Pablo Álvarez explained that, currently, the company provides services as a wholesaler to internet providers outside the region: “Fundamentally, what is provided is connectivity as a wholesale seller and to other companies that use Antel’s infrastructure to connect to the world.”
“Today we have the technical capacity and strategic infrastructure, such as Antel’s participation in the submarine cable and the Data Center. It is a way to grow, and when Antel grows, the country grows,” said the leader.
