The tasks began on Tuesday the 14th to remove 25 of the 50 stranded ships. Curbelo explained that they are working on a call for a second stage, which will consist of removing the rest of the boats.
In this first phase, the company Fewell SA, a member of the Christophersen Group, is in charge of the procedure in the anchorage area of the main port terminal of Montevideo, the Puntas de Sayago area and the northern access and Capurro areas.
By 2023, it is expected to reach the goal and withdraw more than 20 of these ships, as part of the recovery and continuous improvement plan of the port of the capital.
During his visit, Curbelo pointed out that for many years there have been more than 50 abandoned ships in poor condition in the area. In this sense, he added that this administration seeks to improve the environmental and operational conditions of the maritime terminal.
He explained that this first stage contemplates the removal and scrapping of 25 ships, three of which are already working on, in the northern access. Regarding the costs, he indicated that close to 4 million dollars were invested for this phase.
