Havana/A disconnection from the national energy system (SEN), produced by causes that are so far unknown, has left the western half of Cuba without electricity this Wednesday, including Havana. In the capital, the only light at dawn was that of the sun, except in buildings that have power plants.
Although in a first report the official journalist Lázaro Manuel Alonso assured that the country was affected from Cienfuegos to Pinar del Río, in a later update he said that the affected provinces are four: Pinar del Río, Artemisa, Havana and Mayabeque. In this publication, there is a commenter who notes, with sarcasm: “And neither does Sancti Spíritus, I suppose out of solidarity.”
The communicator also assures that the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant, the largest in the country, located in Matanzas, is “online”, and that the Cuban Electrical Union (UNE) is investigating the causes of the disconnection.

The incident is similar to occurred in Octoberwhen a failure in the SEN caused a partial disconnection that affected several eastern provinces, and it could be seen coming, taking into account the calamitous deficit situation of recent days.
On Monday, precisely, the UNE set a new record: an impact of 2,105 megawatts (MW) in the afternoon and evening hours. In that part, unlike what it usually does in its daily part, the state company did not provide the numbers of MW available and demanded, but taking into account that the maximum demand is usually about 3,250 MW, 65% of the country’s energy needs were missing.
Since October 2024, the Island has suffered five total blackoutsthe most recent of them, last September, due to the unforeseen departure of Antonio Guiteras.
