The Texas Nicaraguan Community Organization reported this Thursday, June 16, that Nicaraguan Omar Alejandro Guevara Brenes was found dead in one of the morgues in Mexico, who died of submersion in his attempt to cross the unpredictable Rio Grande, border between Mexico and the United States. The family of the young man from the city of Masaya had reported to the agency that on May 26 of this year his relative tried to cross the river and since then they have not contacted him again.
“A few days ago, the Texas Nicaraguan Community received a report of a disappeared Nicaraguan, Omar Alejandro Guevara Brenes. His family reported his disappearance to us when he crossed the Rio Grande on May 26, 2022 and they no longer had contact with him », the entity detailed in a publication of Facebook.

After an intense search with the support of the Mexican authorities in the state of Coahuila, “a body with the characteristics of Omar Guevara was found among the unidentified bodies. We proceeded to request a fingerprint comparison and they reported that it corresponds to the compatriot,” the organization detailed.
Around 30 Nicaraguans have died in the waters of the Rio Grande in recent months. Most flee the country due to the precarious economic situation, government repression or the search for the “American dream”.
After the report of the first victims, the relatives and organizations of Nicaraguans in the United States have made various collections to raise funds and repatriate the bodies of migrants who drowned in the river.
The US and Mexican administrations agreed to place barbed wire on the banks of the Rio Grande next to Mexico, as a measure to try to reduce the number of migrants entering US soil.
