The anomalous waves recorded in Talara destroyed docks and boats in Lobitos, Cabo Blanco, El Ñuro, Los Órganos and Máncora. Meanwhile, a group of fishermen from El Ñuro and Lobitos chose to climb onto their boats and sail out to sea to keep them safe, becoming trapped.
The strong waves have generated alarm among residents and visitors because the fury of nature that the sea in the district of Máncora experiences has caused the waves to exceed 4 meters in height and has forced the authorities to close access to the fishing landing , Las Pocitas Beach, La Punta Beach and El Amor Beach.
Meanwhile, in Lobitos, the sea has generated an emergency situation, so local authorities have installed a red flag on the beach, warning of the imminent danger on the coast. Lobitos beach sergeant, Lizandro Chapilliquen Ruiz, commented that “the strong swell has especially affected fishermen, with 18 fishing boats including barges, outboard motors, and yachts that have been damaged or destroyed due to the overflow of the sea. The floods began yesterday morning and continue to affect the area and we don’t have any barges,” he said.

TRAPPED. The artisanal fishermen of the El Ñuro and Lobitos cove have been severely affected with the sinking of more than 25 boats, so at least 100 fishermen chose to climb onto their boats and sail out to sea with the aim of avoiding the strong waves. They dragged their boats, overturned them, and destroyed them, remaining trapped in the sea, before which they requested help to bring them water and some provisions.
“Right now we are waiting for the wave to subside, we have brother fishermen who have gone out to see their boats and cannot return. We need help from the captain’s office or by air to rescue them and put them on land,” said Ismael Maza Bayona, a fisherman from El Ñuro, who highlighted that this type of phenomenon had not occurred before in El Ñuro, which has taken surprise to the fishing community in the area.
For her part, the congresswoman for Piura, Maricruz Zeta, requested support from the authorities of the Navy, the Ministry of Defense and the Port Captaincy to carry out the aerial rescue of the fishermen.
