The Peruvian Navy, through its Hydrography and Navigation Directorate, reported that starting today, Friday, January 10, a large part of the Peruvian coast will experience anomalous waves.
This phenomenon, which will affect areas with open or semi-open beaches facing northwest and west, will last until Monday, January 13, according to Special Notice No. 002.
On the northern coast, which extends from Tumbes to Salaverry, the waves will begin with a light intensity during the early hours of Friday, increasing to moderate at night and reaching a strong level in the early hours of Saturday the 11th.
The central coast, from Salaverry to San Juan de Marcona, will show a similar behavior, but with an increase in strong waves from the afternoon of Saturday the 11th.
On the southern coast, which extends from San Juan de Marcona to Tacna, the waves will begin as light in the early hours of Saturday and will intensify to moderate during the night of the same day.
Security recommendations
The Navy urged regional and local governments, as well as port captains and companies, to implement preventive measures to guarantee the safety of the population. Recommended actions include:
- Suspend port and fishing activities.
- Secure vessels and withdraw small fleets to dry land.
- Restrict the access of bathers, artisanal fishermen and water sportsmen to the affected beaches.
The National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) reinforced these recommendations and called on the population to act with caution and avoid unnecessary risks during these days of abnormal waves.
