The International Institute on Race, Equality and Human Rights (Race and Equality) announced the launch of a project aimed at promoting a anti-racist agenda
and a more equitable society.
During a press conference at the headquarters of the Human Rights Commission in Mexico City, and with the participation of different civil organizations, a series of dialogues began aimed at presenting actions and recommendations on this matter.
Carlos Quesada, executive director of Race and Equality, highlighted the political will
of the Mexican State to combat structural racial discrimination, which, he assured, indicates that Mexico is on the right path, but warned that there is an increase, both in Mexico and in other countries, of expressions of racism.
Despite the laws on the matter, there is still no full recognition of this problem, added Alejandra Garduño, director of programs for Latin America at the WK Kellogg Foundation.
Current racial inequalities in Mexico are the consequence and cause of structural exclusion and discrimination against specific, historically oppressed groups. Despite the constitutional and legislative reforms that we also celebrate, this has not necessarily led to racial equity, hence the need for this agenda
he added.
An example of this, he said, are the effects shown in the covid-19 pandemic.
Any anti-racist agenda must be crossed by a gender approach, explained Fátima Gamboa, from the organization Equis, Justice for Women.
