The novel One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967), by the writer Gabriel García Márquez, belonging to the Regional Library of Arequipa, was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation by the Ministry of Culture, since it contains handwritten annotations by the Nobel Prize in Literature Mario Vargas Llosa.
Through Vice-Ministerial Resolution No. 000255-2025-VMPCIC/MC, the historical, literary and documentary value of this copy, which was one of the sources for Vargas Llosa’s thesis at the Complutense University of Madrid, later published with the title García Márquez: historia de un deicide (1971).
Through an analysis of the Functional Unit for Valuation and Defense of Documentary Bibliographic Heritage, of the Collections Protection Directorate of the National Library of Peru, it was determined that Vargas Llosa’s handwritten annotations are a valuable testimony of your analysis process, interpretation and study of the work by García Márquez, as well as the narrative resources and literary techniques present in One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Thus, the specimen has a unique and exceptional valueby integrating a direct source of the intellectual and critical process of the Arequipa writer. Furthermore, it is considered one of the most outstanding literary criticism of the Nobel Prize winner.
The declaration seeks protect and disseminate bibliographic and documentary heritage of the country, as well as the recognition of the work and intellectual legacy.
