Animalist organization claims sanctions against producers who demonstrated in Plaza Independencia

The demonstration of a group of rural producers who came to the Plaza Independencia with some dead and other dying sheep to expose the drama of the dog attack on sheepfolds, generated criticism in various groups and comments on social networks.

This Sunday, the Animalist Platform organization, which brings together animal activists, shelters and rescuers, released an open letter to the Animal Welfare Institute and the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP) where they demanded the “corresponding penalty” and they stressed that a formal complaint has already been made.

The events occurred last Friday, when half a dozen sheep producers, from different parts of the interior of the country such as Durazno and Lavalleja, settled in front of the Executive Tower for a couple of hours to exhibit the bodies of these animals, as a result of dog attacks.

They traveled hundreds of kilometers to denounce, in front of the seat of government, the persistent lack of solutions to a problem that generates serious damage not only economically, but also mentally, as they explained to those who came to speak with them.

In this framework, Animalista Platform points out in its statement that the sheep “were suffering during hours without any assistance” and that, in fact, the objective of the rural producers was to expose them in that way.

The letter also adds that current regulations “does not cover these actions” and that these “explicitly cruel” acts generate great social sensitivity, for which reason it urges sanctions to prevent situations of these characteristics from repeating themselves in the future.

The organization also took the opportunity to make “a call to society” to reflect on the treatment received by animals that are commonly called “production”. “This act that took place in the middle of the city and in full view of all, is nothing more than the cruel reality that most of the animals live: sheep, pigs, chickens, cows, etc.”, adds the statement. “We don’t want dogs attacking sheep, but we don’t want humans to attack either,” he says.
