Animal abuse at a Cuban agricultural fair leads the Ministry of Agriculture to apologize

The Ministry of Agriculture (Minag) of Cuba rejected this Saturday the event of animal abuse that occurred during an agricultural fair organized by the government, according to official media reports on the island.

“The Ministry of Agriculture makes its total disagreement official and repudiates the action carried out by the artists (clown) and the athletes of the national Rodeo team involved in the event,” the agency said in a statement. reviewed by the official Cubadebate website.

The events occurred during a show that took place at the Fiagrop 2022 International Agroindustrial Food Fair, when several people participating in a rodeo located in the Rancho Boyeros fairgrounds, in Havana, shook a small cat inside a sack and others tried to catch him, whipping him with some ropes.

The mistreatment of the feline was denounced in a video published on Facebook by the personal blog “I live as Daguerre”, accompanied by a text that severely questions what happened.

“How can an entire country be educated if international events organized by the Cuban State and its companies act in this way? I publicly denounce the organizers of the Fiagrop 2022 event, all the organizers of the show at the RODEO and anyone else who may be involved in this. I demand answers, I demand compliance with the law and measures for those who break it. Shame », you can read in the post.

What happened generated criticism from independent activists, at the time in which he returned to place the issue of the animal welfare in public debate.

In addition to confirming the event, the Minag showed “its total disagreement and repudiates the action carried out by the artists (clown) and the athletes of the national rodeo team involved in the event,” according to the released statement.

The agency announced through its website that it is carrying out “the corresponding analyzes of the case” and will apply “the administrative, disciplinary and misdemeanor sanctions that correspond to those responsible.”

The episode was described as demeaning, shameful and inhuman in some comments used by several users of the social network when they saw the video, which went viral a day before the peaceful march called by independent activist groups to commemorate Dog Day in Cuba and against animal abuse, exposes the Efe agency.

The Cuban government approved in February of last year the Decree-Law on Animal Welfare, a legislation demanded for years by activists and organizations that defend animals, the aforementioned media reports.

Many celebrated the approval of this policy as a triumph of independent civil society that, apart from mass organizations, has been articulated in the last two years around causes such as animal defense, the fight against gender violence or the rights of the LGTBI community, points out the Spanish agency.

However, some activists have criticized the Decree-Law for considering it inefficient, says Efe.
