The political prisoner and independent journalist denounced new human rights violations in a letter sent to CubaNet and stated that he prefers to die rather than continue imprisoned.

MADRID, Spain.- Cuban journalist and political prisoner Ángel Cuza Alfonso sent a letter from prison in which he denounces new human rights violations committed against him by State Security, after his last arrest in July 2025.

Cuza, an opponent and peaceful protester, has been imprisoned several times in recent years and is currently held in the Guanajay prison, where he was recently transferred under the pretext of being part of an alleged “jilted list.”

In the letter, addressed to CubaNetÁngel Cuza remembers that his first imprisonment occurred on April 30, 2021, in the Combinado del Sur (Matanzas), from which he was released after eight months. The next confinement was between November 7, 2023 and May 2, 2025, when he served a sentence of a year and a half at the Combinado del Este, in Havana.

After his release, he claims that State Security agents showed up at his home without a formal summons and, finally, he was arrested again on July 25, 2025, while he was in front of his sick mother’s house. He was first taken to the police station on 3rd and 10th (Playa) and then transferred to the Marianao unit (the well-known “6ta”).

During the search of the latter unit, the agents claimed to have found a .38 caliber bullet among his belongings, but Cuza was not carrying any weapon. However, he was informed that he was arrested for “possession of firearms and explosives,” which he describes as a setup to justify his imprisonment. Hours later, he says, his personal belongings were returned, but his phone disappeared. According to him, a prison officer informed him that the device had been removed by State Security.

In the letter, Cuza denounces: “I denounce the repressive body of State Security for all the violations committed against me for just thinking differently.”

He adds: “All this was done without any official paper. They took me into custody, they falsely accused me and then my phone was taken away without explanation. I want the violations that are committed against an ordinary Cuban to be known. In Cuba there are no human rights, they are all violated.”

Ángel Cuza also refers to his current situation and the constant surveillance and pressure inside prison, where he is identified as “planted,” that is, a political prisoner who refuses to participate in re-education programs or submit to ideological discipline. According to previously collected testimonies, his transfer to Guanajay responded to a strategy of control and isolation.

In the final part of his message, the opponent expresses that he will not accept another sentence imposed for political reasons: “I am a political prisoner for the third time. If I have to pay another sentence because of the Security, I prefer death. I prefer death rather than being in prison.”

Ángel Cuza Alfonso’s situation continues to be monitored by independent human rights organizations, which warn of a sustained pattern of criminalization of dissent, use of fabricated criminal cases, and exemplary punishments within the Cuban prison system.
