A total of 31 former parliamentarians from the Christian Democracy (DC) -among whom are Andres Zaldivar, Carolina Goic and Alejandro Fosxley– signed a letter in which they support the Rejection option in the face of the plebiscite on the proposal for a new Constitution, which will be held on September 4. In the letter, they noted that the text “does not meet the requirements” to be an “acceptable framework for coexistence.”
“Our doctrine has called us to serve Chile through democratic methods, respectful of human rights and available for agreements with compatriots of different ideas that have the Common Good as the main element,” the signatories in the letter pointed out.
“The study of the Convention proposal has convinced us that it does not meet the essential requirements to serve everyone, as an acceptable framework of coexistence within which legitimate discrepancies can occur in a climate of citizen equality, mutual respect, and legal certainty”, they added in the text.
“For this reason, respectful of the divergent opinions, we publicly declare that, in conscience, we will vote Rejection, and we hopefully support a new process that overcomes the errors of form and substance that we have known in this period in order to be able to count on a Constitution in accordance with with the challenges of Chile in the 21st century”, they concluded.
Let us remember that the National Board of the DC decided on July 6 to support the Approve option in the face of the exit plebiscite. In this way, the 31 ex-parliamentary signatories of the letter go against the position of the party.
