The director of the NGO VE Sin Filter, Andres Azpuruaasserted that the social media bill, under discussion within the National Assembly elected in 2020, “is a very serious threat to human rights.”
“There is talk of requiring the platforms to set up offices in Venezuela to regulate the complaints that arrive, but that is unlikely,” Azpúrua warned in an interview with Radio Fe y Alegría News.
He considers that in Venezuela “the internet is increasingly important for our lives”, because “it is a necessity to access our rights”.
The supposed bill for social networks has been on the table since Deputy Juan Carlos Alemán assured that his objective is to put the country “on par” with others in which there is legislation on the use of these technological platforms.
“It is the bill that puts the country on a par with what is being worked on in other parts of the world: there is legislation in Spain, Germany, Ecuador, Argentina. We have determined that making legislation that regulates the use of social networks does not mean controlling,” said Alemán in the video broadcast on October 18.

The also specialist in digital security recalled that to deal with Internet censorship there are programs that can be installed on computers and mobile phones, such as VPNs, which can easily be located through download stores.

“Installing a VPN is the best way to bypass censorship. It is for this reason that through our Twitter account @vesinfiltro we offer information on how to install them step by step on computers and cell phones”, he said.
VPNs can be used to hide your real IP address and allow you to access content that is restricted or blocked based on your geographic position or by your operator, even for pages that are not entirely legal.
Regarding the issue of disinformation, he said that it is necessary for citizens to locate reliable sources of people, institutions or organizations, since “false information only seeks to disorient, generate anxiety or anguish.”
