Andahuaylas: Protesters take police hostage and protests leave at least 20 injured

Protesters took a member of the National Police (PNP) hostage in the province of Andahuaylas, Apurímac region, within the framework of the second day of the indefinite strike that is observed in that town.

As reported by Canal N, citing the Andahuaylas Police Division, the protests have left at least 20 injured, while two other people have been arrested.

In this regard, the Ombudsman reported that it is the Petty Officer PNP Walter Silvera Obregón and called for his immediate release. He explained that the agent is being held by groups of protesters near the city’s Plaza de Armas.

Protesters used slingshots and stones in their attempt to reach the Public Ministry headquarters, while law enforcement officers used tear gas.

The mob demands the closure of the Congress of the Republic, the resignation of President Dina Boluarte and the call for new general elections.

It should be noted that businesses and traffic in the city are paralyzed by the protests, while the population remains in their homes.

Meanwhile, more than 50 police officers from the Abancay Special Services Unit are heading to Andahuaylas in support of the city’s police division.
